REGINA - An incident at Wascana Pool has resulted in the pool being closed for the rest of the day.
According to a news release from the City of Regina, this afternoon Regina Police Service responded to an incident involving an altercation in the changeroom. Reports on social media indicate this was an alleged pepper spray or bear spray incident.
This was supposed to have been the opening day for Wascana Pool. The pool was set to re-open Friday, June 9. To ensure the safety of visitors and staff, the city said increased security measures would be implemented including having security onsite.
Regina Police Service has also issued this update with details on the situation:
At approximately 2:10 p.m. this afternoon (Thursday, June 8, 2023) officers were dispatched to 2400 Wascana Drive (Wascana Pool) for a report of a weapons incident.
When they arrived, they discovered upwards of 200 patrons who were suffering from the effects of bear spray. Witnesses told the officers that a group of four to five suspects wearing balaclavas and other face coverings entered the facility and began to discharge a can of bear spray. Witnesses describe the suspects as males who are approximately 13-16 years-old.
Members of the Regina Police Service Canine Unit, Patrol Unit and plain clothes officers from our Investigative Services Unit are currently working on the investigation.
