NORTH BATTLEFORD — The countdown to the 2024 municipal election in North Battleford has begun, with election day just two months away.

Nominations packages are now available for download on the city's website for those interested in running for mayor or city councillor.

The nomination period will run from Sept. 25 to Oct. 9. All forms must be submitted by 4 p.m. on Oct, 9. Be sure to submit during these dates to ensure your nomination is considered.

New this year, candidates are required to include a criminal record check and a vulnerable sector check from the Battlefords RCMP Detachment. These checks, which take five to seven business days to process, must be issued within 30 days before submitting the nomination papers.

Announced Monday, the city will replace its 24-hour criminal records check service with a new online option. For $75, you can now get your check without visiting City Hall or the RCMP.

The updated bylaw now includes an exemption for Indigenous people reclaiming their traditional names. They can obtain their criminal record checks for free at city hall, although they must follow the existing in-person process.

A criminal record does not disqualify a candidate from running.

To help candidates prepare, several information sessions are scheduled:

  • SUMA Governance Webinar for Cities: Sept. 19, 6:30-7:30 p.m.
  • City of North Battleford Information Session 1: Sept. 12, 4:30-6:30 p.m. at North Battleford Public Library
