Sentencing for accused in Gregory Cope's death slated for September

BATTLEFORD - A man facing charges in the death of Gregory Cope will be sentenced next month. 

Travis Jean, age 34, was initially charged with first-degree murder in the matter. He instead pleaded guilty to second-degree murder when his case was last heard on Aug. 16. 

An additional charge of  arson – disregard for human life was stayed. 

Jean, who is in custody, was arrested in Lloydminster on May 17, 2023.

His sentencing hearing is now scheduled for Sept. 26, 2024 at the Court of King's Bench in Battleford.

Cope was reported as missing  to Battlefords RCMP on Feb. 21, 2023. Police previously said that Cope, 32, was found deceased inside a home on 27th Street West in Battleford that was destroyed by fire on Feb. 18, 2023. Investigators found his human remains in the debris of the house fire on Feb. 27 of that year.
