The last time I sat down to write an article for this paper I was upset about the break in that had happened at the skating rink warm up shack here in Meota. In that one I expressed my views on the disgusting behaviour that leads to the type of damage and disrespect of public and personal property.
This past week this same type of behaviour repeated itself here in Meota, as the post office was broken into and a number of items stolen. From the information I have there were many packages taken in the break in, including a large number of items included in an Avon order. We personally know that a parcel intended for our household was in those that were absconded with, so this hit even closer to home for us and many others who get their mail here.
In this case, as in the skate shack vandalism, the acts are committed against the whole community and are felt by many. Those who commit these acts do not seem to comprehend that each and every act of this type damages the whole of society not just the few individuals they target directly.
I feel justice is not met unless those responsible pay their due to society and, once a person commits such an act they have removed themselves from that society and do not deserve the rights set out for responsible citizens.
The question that hits me is how can we claim a person is being held responsible for their acts in a jail system that pays them to sit on their duffs without any responsible actions being demanded and where they are coddled with benefits our regular citizens cannot afford? How can we say they have paid a debt to society when it costs that society an exorbitant amount to keep each and every one of them? Who is it that is paying for their actions? I thought it was they who had to pay, not the rest of us.
This past week also saw the start of some new development here. For a number of days now a crawler tractor has been operating in the area along the lakefront to the north of the Sparrow subdivision. From the limited information I have gleaned, there is going to be some extensive work done to make this area ready for a development that will include a large amount of earth moving. From what I understand, this expansion will prepare a large number of new residential lots and will require extensive infrastructure development to service them. Once I get more details I will include them in future submissions.
