ARBORFIELD — A structure fire in Arborfield led to several destroyed power lines, burning on an exterior of a home and a destroyed garage.
The Arborfield Fire Department responded to the call of a garage on fire in the residential area of town at about 1 a.m. on April 22.
When firefighters arrived on scene, they were faced with an additional obstruction.
“We had some burnt power lines down when we were on scene from the neighbouring homes,” said Chet Edwards, Arborfield’s fire chief.
“It was obstructing us somewhat to get to the fire, but after a few minutes of accessing the scene we were able to get out the fire from another area that was safe for everyone.”
While some of the members focused on putting out the garage fire with water, other members were sent out with flags to block people from coming near the downed lines.
“It was about 25 minutes later, after we responded, might have even been sooner, that SaskPower arrived,” Edwards said.
With SaskPower’s arrival, the power was disconnected from the lines.
No additional buildings were caught on fire – except for melted siding at a home on the same property as the garage.
“Nothing in the garage was saved. The entire structure was burnt, but we did save the very close, very close surrounding homes. We’re talking very close,” he said.
No injuries were reported.
The Zenon Park Fire Department was momentarily mobilized to assist.
“They got a stand-down right as they were leaving the hall, but with the powerlines down we were getting nervous of the other buildings,” Edwards said.
“A big thank you to the Zenon Park Fire Department for being available.”
The cause of the fire is not known at this time.
