Darcy Bear invested into Order of Canada

Long-time chief of Whitecap Dakota Nation honoured.

WHITECAP DAKOTA NATION — Chief Darcy Bear of the Whitecap Dakota Nation, has received the Order of Canada award from Gov. Gen. Mary Simon. Originally announced in October 2020, the formal investiture was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Oct. 6 marks Chief Bear’s 30th anniversary as chief of Whitecap Dakota Nation. Elected to council in 1991 at the age of 23 and then as chief in 1994, Chief Bear’s visionary leadership over the past 30 years has not only improved the quality of life for Whitecap Dakota Nation but has contributed to the economic and social well-being of the province of Saskatchewan and Canada as a whole, a press release states.

The Order of Canada is awarded to individuals across Canada to celebrate outstanding and extraordinary contributions to the nation, recognizing those who enrich the lives of others and make a difference in the country.

“Since its creation in 1967— Canada’s centennial year — more than 7,600 people from all sectors of society have been invested into the order. The contributions of these trailblazers are varied, yet they have all enriched the lives of others and made a difference to this country. Their grit and passion inspire us, teach us and show us the way forward.” (Governor General’s Website)
