There will be faces new and old at council meetings around the Battlefords, with new mayors and councillors being elected in many communities.

In Blaine Lake, former councillor Andy Ciona was elected as mayor. Serving with him on council will be returning councillors Kyle Onishenko, Christina (Kitty) Larson and Keith Woytiuk, along with newcomers Karen Fiala, Debbie Rodwin and Al Sorenson.

Borden saw their mayor, David Buckingham, returned by acclamation. Out of only two newcomers challenging three councillors, Tom Redhead was elected. Terry Tkaczyk, Ian Tracksell and Jamie Brandrick returned to council.

Cut Knife saw an upset in their mayor's race, with Gwenn Kaye defeating the previous mayor Germaine Vany. The three incumbents running for reelection, Vincent Labossiere, Robert Rowat and Mel Sawatsky all returned to council. Joining them were newcomers Roger Emberley, Douglas Robertson and Travis Sorenson.

In Edam, Larry McDaid returned as mayor, by acclamation, along with councillors Sheila Orchison, Ken McConnell and Arnold Poole. Councillor Barry Weitzel, however, submitted his nomination papers late, meaning he could be opposed if anyone else decided to run. With no one in the community making that decision, he returned to council unopposed.

In Hafford, former councillor Ron Kowalchuk will occupy the mayor's chair, after defeating Russ MacNutt in the election. Sylvia Ruedger will return to council along with Art Lacey and Ray Prysliak, but there was a call for nominations for the last seat. Margaret-Rose Uvery, as the only person who answered the call, will be the fourth councillor.

In Maidstone, Connie McCulloch was reelected as mayor after being challenged by Tim Melnyk and Riley Tuplin. The five councillors running for reelection were all reelected - Brennan Becotte, Dwayne Lyons, Rodney Marfleet, Larry Nogue and Clare Welwood. The newcomer on council will be Krissy Higgins.

Meota's vote saw a two-way race for mayor and seven candidates running for four council seats, with only one incumbent councillor. They, accordingly, had a large turnout, around 57 per cent. John MacDonald was reelected as mayor, and the new council will be made up of Betty Johnson, Greg Shury, Robert Colliar and Maurice Gauthier, all of whom are new councillors.

In Paynton, Dave R. Florizone was not reelected. Ken Parohl will be the new mayor. The council incumbents, Robert Preuss and Joey Mosher, were both reelected, and Tish Boychuk and Dewey Taylor will join them on council.

Radisson also had an exciting race, with three mayoral candidates and nine council candidates. In the end, Don Tanner, who was not previously on council won the mayor's election. As in most communities, most of the incumbents found reelection. Out of the three running, Darren Harris and Michelle Nelson were reelected. The other four seats were taken by newcomers Marion Fehr-Stead, Denise Girous, David Summers and Marlane Wenner.

In St. Walburg, Tony Leeson was reelected as mayor. But the council is in an interesting situation. Larry Steinacher, Walter Looshorn, Lois Hawryluk, Darrell Mullis and Pat Rutherford were all elected to council by acclamation, after a call for nominations was sent out. Clayton Maher was also elected to council by acclamation, but resigned from council. Maher's resignation will leave council with quorum, but another call for nominations has been sent out with a Nov. 14 deadline. The election for the last seat, if an election is necessary, will be held Dec. 19.

Turtleford's Roland Olson will remain the mayor, after running unopposed. Returning to council will be Doug Ask, Cliff Currie, Robert Knowlton, Caroll Spence and Cheryl Starnes. The town, like many others, had to have another call for nominations. Darin Willy was the only person to answer the second call to nominations, and so will join the others on council.

Sylvia Maljan will return as Unity's mayor, and the new council was filled after a second call for nominations was sent out. Erik Hansen, Don Robertson and Richard Briggs will return to council, along with Brian Vanderlinde and Terry Flaherty. Brent Webber answered the call for nominations, and will therefore take the last seat on council.

Wilkie's new mayor will be David Ziegler, who was elected after previously serving on council. All seats on council were filled by acclamation after an additional call for nominations was issued. The council will be made of Carol Dalainey, David Dornstauder, Nissen Jason, Cathy Hellman, Alex Majewski and Maryellen Herzog

In Glaslyn, Maymont, Paradise Hill and Spiritwood, both the mayor and council were acclaimed before the election.
