Humboldt Fire Department has another busy week

Humboldt Fire Department received another two calls this week to attend to fires in the area.

The first one on Apr. 25 was to a farm yard south of the city.

Fire Chief, Mike Kwasnica, says they received the call at 4:30 pm  and were on scene in 13 minutes. By the time they were on scene, three buildings were already partially destroyed, a quonset, garage/workshop, and coal storage, as well as a fifth-wheel trailer, tractors, and ATVs.

There was slight damage to the house and a back shed but the fire department was able to quell the fire before they could be damaged further.

The second call on Apr. 27 was a grass fire west of the city that was caused by a person welding in their yard.

The person did not notice the sparks until the fire had already started but had tried to put it out. The fire got away from him, says Kwasnica, and he called the fire department.

Fortunately, some passersby did stop to help and the fire was pretty well extinguished before the fire department arrived on site.

Since this is the time of equipment work around the yard and farm, Kwasnica would like to remind people to always have some way of dosing a fire close by just incase.

“Anything that sparks, it’s okay to do, just make sure you have a backup plan,” says Kwasnica.

The Humboldt Fire Department would also like to remind people that are doing a controlled burn to call the fire department at their new controlled burn number at 1-866-404-4911.
