MELFORT — Summer can be a busy time for the North East SPCA (NESPCA) and the Animal Control Officers in the City of Melfort.
The city would like to remind residents that any dogs that get loose and escape their yards are in violation of the Dog Control Bylaw and will be taken to the NESPCA for their owners to pick up, said Shaun Stewart, the city’s protective services directory.
Around eight to 15 animals in a month get picked up by Animal Control and the SPCA does keep a record of dogs that have come in that get picked up by their owners. Stewart said that they do send written warnings about the bylaw violation but too many incidents can result in fines for repeat offenders.
“The dog owner is responsible for the animal. The dog only knows what it's used to. Train your dog to stay in his yard and that's what it'll do.”
