An unexpected left turn led to a collision on Hwy. 5 on Father's Day.
At approximately 2:30 p.m. on June 19, emergency crews from Humboldt were called to a collision between a quad and a motorcycle about three miles west of the Bruno junction on Hwy. 5.
A motorcycle driven by a man from Humboldt was eastbound on Hwy. 5 when he came upon a quad carrying a male and a female from Saskatoon, also eastbound on Hwy. 5.
The motorcycle was approaching the quad when, without notice, the male driver attempted to make a left turn off the highway, onto a driveway.
The motorcycle was trying to pass the quad at the time, and ended up hitting the quad on its left rear corner.
The quad was pushed off the highway and into some water on the side of the road. Neither of the two people on the quad was wearing a helmet.
The driver of the motorcycle lost control after striking the quad, and lay the bike down on its side, where it skidded along the road for quite a distance.
Road conditions were dry at the time, it was noted.
According to Derek Dagenais of the Humboldt and District Ambulance Service (HDAS), Wadena Emergency Medical Services (EMS) came upon the scene prior to Humboldt HDAS units and started treatment on the three people injured - the two people from the quad and one from the motorcycle.
Members of the Humboldt Fire Department also responded to the emergency call, and were on scene to assist EMS personnel.
HDAS transported two patients to Humboldt District Hospital, and Wadena EMS transported the other, all with minor injuries.
One patient was later transported to Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon for investigation of further injuries.
This crash is "another reminder that recreational vehicles are on the move and everyone needs to pay extra attention to one another," Dagenais said.
"Injuries with these types of vehicles tend to be more significant because of lack of protection a regular vehicle provides, so more caution must be taken."
Charges are pending against the driver of the quad, RCMP noted.
