NIPAWIN — The Nipawin RCMP is warning the public to lock their car doors after a series of break and enters were reported.
Over the month of October the Nipawin RCMP responded to 42 reports of break and enters/thefts. S/Sgt. Terry Posnikoff said the majority were vehicles. In one case a firearm was stolen from an unlocked vehicle.
“A trend we’re continuing to see on a month by month basis is this break and enters and thefts,” Posnikoff said. “The vast majority are from vehicles and almost 100 per cent of the time they’re vehicles that have been left unlocked.”
Posnikoff told Nipawin council in his monthly report to the town that they haven’t had a recent instance where someone’s window was broken in an effort to get something inside the vehicle.
“They’re choosing the easy targets and moving on if the doors are locked, so this is a message we’re really trying to get out to folks. Whether it’s their garage, same thing, people have (been) snooping in garage and sheds.”
In his report, Posnikoff requested the town consider making an announcement on the website encouraging residents to lock their doors.
“I know people say, ‘We shouldn’t have to do this,’ but unfortunately in the day and age in which we live we have to lock up our belongings,” he said.
“The feedback that we get in almost every one of these instances is folks saying, ‘If I lock my vehicle they’ll just break a window.’ That hasn’t proven to be the case, and I can say that’s not just for Nipawin, but everywhere else I’ve ever been. Nobody wants a chance at cutting or hurting themselves.”
Over the month of October, the detachment responded to a total of 386 new calls for service. This involved three firearm/weapon investigations, 23 reported assaults, eight reports of fraud, and 31 reports of mischief/vandalism.
