In January, there is an urge to start planning the Canadian Cancer Society's Relay for Life.
Unity has hosted six relays and shared hosting with Wilkie last year. This year the Relay was supposed to move to our third partner and come back to Unity in 2012. Unfortunately our third partner is unable to host and members of past organizing committees don't feel that there is enough time or interest for Unity to host Relay for Life in 2011.
All is not lost as there are many Relays held in Saskatchewan, actually around the world. There will be one in Meadow Lake on June 3-4 and in North Battleford on June 10-11. Saskatoon and Lloydminster will also be hosting and they will be advertising their events as it gets closer to the date. You can also find the dates at www.cancer.ca, click on the Relay for Life site and find the information you need there for any Relay in Canada.
We still encourage people to form teams, get pledges and walk. Survivors are welcome at any and all Relays. We will be getting survivor forms and having them available in town for any survivors who would like to attend at another site.
For many people the luminary ceremony has been an emotional way to celebrate and remember loved ones who have had cancer. Luminaries can be purchased online, or from team members and your loved ones will still be honoured.
Unity has done itself proud in past relays as organizers found distinction in being the only relay in Saskatchewan without expenses our first year. The event was mentioned at the annual provincial relay meeting. To have a town and area so fully behind this event was something to be proud of.
This doesn't mean the end of Relay For Life in Unity. Those who would like to be on the organizing committee and bring the event back in 2012 there is a lot of experienced help available.
