Two young persons have been implicated in a weekend bear spray attack on a teenager who sustained life-threatening injuries.
The two, a 15-year-old and a 17-year-old, have been arrested and charged with aggravated assault in connection to the incident, which took place early Sunday morning in North Battleford.
The two individuals charged cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. They appeared in North Battleford provincial court Monday morning and were remanded in custody pending a show cause hearing Tuesday.
According to the RCMP, Battlefords municipal detachment received a 911 call from a 14-year-old around 1:30 a.m. Sunday.
Police were told the 14-year-old and a 16-year-old friend were walking home when they were approached by several males who attacked them with bear spray without any warning.
The 14-year-old ran away, but the 16-year-old was caught and beaten.
Police found the 16-year-old in the 1900 block area of 110th Street . They say sustained life-threatening injuries.
The victim was transported to Battlefords Union Hospital and was stabilized there before being transferred to Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon. According to the RCMP he remains in serious but stable condition.
According to police, the investigation resulted in charges of aggravated assault against the two youths as well as various weapons charges for the bear spray attack. As well, an arrest warrant has been issued for another 16-year-old (not the victim) in the case. Police say the victims and the accused knew each other, but it does not appear there is any previous history.
Both Battlefords municipal detachment and municipal GIS continue to investigate, and additional charges are pending in the case.
