This was the scene Thursday afternoon at the work bee held at the Gagne Ave. community garden in North Battleford. The idea is to keep out the quack grass that is a big problem for the various plants being grown in the garden.

The community garden on Gagne Avenue has been getting some additional attention in order to keep it in good shape.

It was their work bee day at the garden Thursday. A number of volunteers were on hand during the late afternoon and evening to haul mulch, cardboard and other items in order to keep the weeds out of the garden.

"We're just doing some improvements to the edge of the garden, and putting down some paths and some bark mulch to reduce the amount of quack grass at our community garden," said Debbie Bonsan, executive director of Midwest Food Resource Project Inc.

The plan for the day also includes trying some chemical-free methods to get rid of the quack grass as well, to see which ones work and that they could try at the community garden next year.

Quack grass is a widespread noxious weed in Canada, and getting rid of it is important for helping the gardeners grow their vegetables.

"A lot of the gardeners are finding it difficult to keep up with the weeds and things because of the quack grass infringing on their gardens," said Bonsan. "It's a lot of hard work to pull them out so we're hoping we can put enough mulch down to reduce the amount of quack grass getting into their garden spaces."

This was their second work bee at the location - the first one was held just a few weeks ago - and the volunteers are thankful for the donations they have had for the project. They particularly thanked Guys Furniture and Battleford Furniture for the donation of the cardboard used that day.
