Efforts towards a new Co-op gas bar and convenience store took a step forward Wednesday at City Hall.
At a special meeting, city council gave second and third reading and final approval to a zoning bylaw amendment to rezone a portion of land from C4 Commercial to C3 Commercial.
The land is located on the southeast corner of the Walmart parking lot and expands a site that used to be occupied by Murphy Oil. Battlefords and District Co-op acquired the land earlier this year with intent to develop a gas bar, convenience store and car wash on the site.
The rezoning was done to allow subdivision of the site and allow independent title to be created on the property. Also approved at the meeting was a resolution authorizing the mayor and city clerk to issue a Cities Certificate of Approval covering the subdivision of part of the lot.
The unanimous approval clears the way for construction on the new gas bar in the southeast quadrant. The Co-op's interest in the location at the corner of Walmart was explained earlier this spring by then-General Manager Pat Smith to reporters at the Co-op's annual general meeting.
Smith had noted the location was in close proximity to the Credit Union CUPlex, adding the Co-op "wanted to be one of the first ones in there."
