Hammerheads finish second at provincials

The Watrous Swimming Pool was full of hammerheads on the weekend as the Humboldt Hammerheads Swim Team traveled to Watrous for the provincial championships.

The Hammerheads took 34 swimmers to the championships where they competed against 218 swimmers from 16 clubs from across the province.

The meet saw the Hammerheads enjoy a tremendous amount of success as they picked up four aggregate points medals, and finished second overall in the team points competition, missing out on first by 286 points.

Charlize Parish lead the charge for the Hammerheads as she picked up the teams only gold medal as she won the Girls 11-12 competition, picking up 60 points to beat the second place finisher by just 1.5 points.

The rest of the Hammerheads’ medal came in the bronze variety as Lauren Hinz, Jay Eichorst, and Maya Berscheid all finished third.

Hinz picked up her bronze medal in the Girls 13-14 event as she finished in a tie for third with 56 points, missing out on a silver medal by just one point.

Eichorst meanwhile, was the lone male Hammerheads swimmer to claim an aggregate points medal as he finished third in the Boys 13-14 event after picking up 55 points, just two shy of the silver medal.

Eichorst’s aggregate points total was boosted by his gold medal in the 200m backstroke, where he swam to a new provincial record time, improving on the 25 year old record by more than a second and a half.

Rounding out the aggregate points medal winners for the Hammerheads was Berscheid who finished third in the Girls 15-17 competition, as she claimed 58 points, missing out on a three-way tie for first place by just five points.

Despite only coming home with four aggregate points medals, the Hammerheads enjoyed a numbe/r of excellent results in individual races as they came away with 11 golds, 12 silvers, and ten bronzes.

The Hammerheads also claimed a tremendous amount of medals in relay races, winning ten gold medals, 11 silver medals, and 15 bronze medals.

In addition to finishing with a plethora of medals, the Hammerheads also achieved great individual success as well, with a number of swimmers reaching personal best times, throughout the weekend.

The end of provincials marks the end of the Hammerheads season, as they will be out of the pool until the beginning of May, 2018.

In the meantime, they will celebrate their season with a windup in September.
