UNITY — Girls Prairie Softball League was founded in 2010 to grow the game of softball and provide the highest level of competition for its member teams.
The Town of Unity will be the host community for the Cassidy Cup league championship playoffs, June 23-25. Unity Panthers will have a team competing in each division of the playoff weekend.
Operating as a multi-weekend league, GPLS teams play across Alberta and Saskatchewan with set regular season schedules. This purpose is to help develop teams that otherwise were finding their own games to play in a season to prepare for provincial competitions.
The GPLS website says the results have spoken for themselves as GPLS teams have increasingly dominated medal podiums at their respective provincial championships attended.
GPLS includes divisions in both A and B of teams in U11, U13, U15, U17 and normally U19, however, 2023 U19 was not part of the program because of a lack of teams.
Unity has played host to the GPLS events prior to the pandemic and is proud to be back as host diamonds for the 2023 Cassidy Cup.
Initially expecting 44 teams, there were some changes due to Alberta Zone provincial playoffs. As of June 21, the GPLS website had draws for the four divisions being played in Unity. Four teams were part of the U11 division, while nine teams will be competing in the U12 division. U15 division will include eight teams as will the U17 division, which makes 30 teams in total.
"This is very exciting for Unity and let's give our visitors a warm welcome all across town," says Mayor Sharon Del Frari.
