REGINA — It’s that time of year again when the City of Regina is reminding residents to band their trees this spring to prevent damage by pests and disease.

The city recommends banding all elm trees, Manitoba maples and fruit trees to prevent the spread of Dutch Elm Disease and cankerworms throughout Regina. According to statistics from the City of Regina, stopping one cankerworm from laying eggs through tree banding can prevent nearly 400 larvae from hatching in spring.

To band trees, residents will require fibreglass insulation, plastic wrap or a black garbage bag, duct tape and a sticky substance on the wrap to catch worms and pests.

Experts warn bands should be removed by the end of May or middle of June to prevent tree trunk rot due to wet insulation. Experts also recommend banding trees again from September to mid-November to reduce disease and pest damage. Bands should be removed before winter sets in.
