SASKATOON—Saskatchewan Green Party Leader Naomi Hunter annually balances her time in rural Saskatchewan and the city. During summer, she helps run their family’s haskap berry farm near Prince Albert with her father.
But for the rest of the year, Hunter operates her retail store, selling custom-made sterling jewelry in Riversdale.
She was born in Turtleford in northwestern Sask., and grew up in northern Saskatchewan, which made her understand the strong ties people have in rural communities.
Hunter was also the first to live full-time with her children in Craik’s Sustainable Living Project, where they resided off the grid in a yurt, equipped with a solar panel to combat Saskatchewan’s brutal winter conditions.
She says that this experience proved the green values and ideas the Green Party advocates can be applied to the Prairie climate.
Hunter advocates for environmental responsibility and campaigns against injustices. She has organized protest actions, petitions and events throughout her life, volunteering her time in pancake breakfasts, park cleanups and helping people move into safe housing.
She looks forward to helping the residents of Saskatoon West with measures to counteract the significant issues of poverty, homelessness and addictions.
