Gordon F. Kells High School is very honoured to present the beginning phase of our exciting Truth and Reconciliation mural/visual project.
The objective of this project is to invite students, staff, and community to collaborate and create a mural/visual representation that symbolizes our school’s commitment to celebrating our diversity, history and the reconciliation process. The main piece of this project was completed by local artist Michael Lonechild.Â
He created a large painting artistically describing the Treaty Map of Saskatchewan. The goal now is for students to add to this project with their own creations.Â
The project hopes to encourage students to consider what reconciliation means to them personally. Students can discover and share their cultural identities and meaningful impact through writing projects, arts and crafts, and photography.
Lonechild would like to guide, inspire and mentor participating students. However, due to COVID-19 and current restrictions, this mentorship will be done virtually.
This mural/visual is located on wall inside the main entrance of our school to greet all students, staff and community in a welcoming, all-inclusive manner. This project will focus on helping students and community to increase their appreciation of the value of multiculturalism and will be a daily reminder of the spirit of co-operation in our school community.
A new reporting system called EDSBY has been rolled out for parents to use in order to see students’ attendance and marks. Its purpose is to improve electronic communication between school and home. Contact the school if you haven’t received your password or are having problems logging onto the system. Remember, if you ever have questions or concerns to discuss with your child’s particular teachers, please email the teacher or contact the school.
Again this year the school will be collecting donations for the Carlyle and District Food Bank. Send your non-perishable food items to the school before Dec. 18. The classroom cohort with the most donations (per capita) will win a complete sandwich lunch. The second and third place classroom cohorts will win frozen treats.
The school student leadership team is again promoting school spirit with the Twelve Days of Christmas. Remaining themed activities include Dec. 11 (Christmas Spirit Clothing Day), Dec. 14 (Ornament Decorating Day), Dec. 15 (Holiday Movie Lines Day), Dec. 16 (Lumberjack Day – wear plaid) and Dec. 17 (Last Man Standing) with prizes from local businesses).
Some of these activities will look a little bit different from previous years, as they will be over the intercom, in cohorts, etc., but they will still be a lot of fun.
The Christmas Break begins Dec. 19. Students return to school on Jan. 4, 2021.
