Legion flagraising

Weyburn Mayor Marcel Roy raised the flag for the Royal Canadian Legion at City Hall on Friday morning in anticipation of Remembrance Day on Wednesday, Nov. 11.

Watching the flag-raising are, from left, Coun. Winston Bailey and Legion members Jody Tytlandsvik, chaplain Marj McLeod, Brian Glass, Pastor Victoria Mwamasika and sergeant-at-arms Owen White.

The Remembrance Day service will be online this year due to restrictions for the COVID-19 pandemic.

The service will be held indoors on Wednesday, Nov. 11, at the Legion Hall, but it will not be open to the public. The laying of the wreaths and the two minutes of silence will be observed, and the service will be livestreamed so people will be able to watch the service.

The sale of poppies also began on Friday, and it will be done by Legion members as the Legion Cadets have not been able to meet due to COVID. The Legion members will be selling the poppies at stores around Weyburn from now until Remembrance Day. Sales of the wreaths for Remembrance Day is largely being done over the phone this year, to avoid in-person contacts around the community. Any group, individual or business which wants to purchase a wreath for Remembrance Day is urged to get in touch with the Legion, if they have not been called yet.
