Roy Hardy, Weyburn’s new city manager, had his first day on the job at Weyburn City Hall on August 14. Hardy had previously held the position as city manager of Humboldt. Hardy is community oriented and excels in strategic planning and priority based budgeting. He will bring his passion, skills in problem solving, community engagement, and desire for new experiences to the City of Weyburn.
“I have had the chance to take a quick tour of Weyburn, and have seen some of the infrastructure that is in place around the city. I have also met with the managers and the staff from City Hall,” said Hardy. “It is important to know who is doing what, and how the city staff have organized their duties and services.”
After working as city manager of Humboldt for three years, and before that had worked in Ontario for close to 15 years, Hardy feels that he understands a good mix of the city manager responsibilities. “I have worked in a number of rural, urban, mixed-rural, and city governments in all of those areas. My early career was in the area of human resource administration, and was very much involved with working with the work labour market.”
“I was also a small businessman, so I understand what it means to have to pay the bills, to pay the taxes, and to make the hard decisions,” said Hardy.
Hardy will be working with city council on bringing the strategic plan to life, and focusing its objectives, but he understands city hall can’t do everything on its own. “The city isn’t in a position to do everything, and the city is getting less and less resources from provincial sources, and so that means that we have to look at some different ways of doing things together to make things happen.”
“When you are working with council, and a different staff, it gives you the opportunity to develop new long-range planning that will help us as a community to give us a vision and moving forward towards that vision,” said Hardy.
In addition, Hardy is excited to check out some of the community organizations that make Weyburn unique. “A lot of the work that I have done in communities has been around working with the business community and the non-profit sector in terms of community development.”
“I love sports at the junior, immediate and senior level, particularly hockey. My wife and I are looking forward to attending local arts activities too, since we enjoy small country theatre and productions that come traveling through the area.”
