Team South East wins eight more medals on Thursday

It was another successful day for Team South East at the 2016 Saskatchewan Summer Games in Estevan, as the region’s athletes enjoyed success in swimming and in canoe-kayak.

It was another successful day for Team South East at the 2016 Saskatchewan Summer Games in Estevan, as the region’s athletes enjoyed success in swimming and in canoe-kayak.

Team South East won a gold and seven bronze on Thursday, bringing their total to 25 medals. The host region’s athletes have now won six gold, six silver and 13 bronze medals.

Thursday marked the start of the second half of competition for the Games. Athletes competed in canoe-kayak, equestrian, male soccer, softball swimming, tennis and male and female volleyball.

The most recent gold medal came in the pool, as Aden Dickenson of Emerald Park took top spot in the male 100-metre backstroke with a time of one minute and 8.63 seconds. Dickinson also won bronze in the male 100-metre fly with a time of 1:14.96.

Also in the pool, Hannah Mantei of Estevan won a bronze medal in the female 200-metre breaststroke with a time of 3:03.96, and Team South East won bronze in the female 4x100-metre freestyle relay, with a time of 4:42.63.

Team members were Mantei, Adah De Leeuw and Teaghan Hack, all from Estevan, and Bryn Lamontagne of Oxbow.

In canoe-kayak, Team South East brought home four bronze medals. Lorynn Labbie and Savannah Pohl of Weyburn won bronze in the female K-2 1,000 metres with a time of 5:54.58; Erik Barsness and Mason Thackeray of Weyburn won bronze in the male K-2 4,000 metres with a time of 24:00.66; Alexis Vandermay and Arliss Sidloski won bronze in the female C-2 4,000 metres with a time of 32:34.01; and Pohl and Drew Barsness won bronze in the mixed C-2 4,000 metres with a time of 28:39.71.

Equestrian opened with barrel racing, dressage, jumping and reigning. In the individual coed barrel racing, the five southeast athletes entered – Ashley Weber of Carlyle (second), Kayla Wanner of Estevan (third), Kia Rosenbaum of Estevan (fourth), McKenna Desautels of Zehner (sixth) and Cassidy Weber of Carlyle (ninth) – had strong showings in the first day.

Team South East won all three of their games in female volleyball. They went 2-0 in the round robin, beating Team North 2-1 (24-26, 25-6, 15-13) and Team Lakeland 2-1 (20-25, 25-20, 15-9). After the teams were repooled, they shut out Team Saskatoon 2-0 (25-18, 25-16). They will play Regina tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. at Spruce Ridge School.

The male volleyball team also won all three of their games. They opened with a 2-1 (11-25, 25-15, 15-9) win over Rivers West, and shut out Team North 2-0 (25-19, 25-15).

South East then upended Lakeland 2-1 (15-25, 25-18, 25-12). They will play Saskatoon Friday morning at 8:30 a.m.

In male soccer, Team South East opened with a 2-1 loss to Regina in a game that wasn’t decided until the final minutes. Then they dropped a 3-1 decision to Parkland Valley.

Team South East split their opening games in softball. They defeated the South West 13-11 in extra innings, but lost 4-2 to Regina a few hours later. They will finish the round robin tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m. against Team Rivers West.

Hunter Wallster of Estevan went 1-1 in male tennis on Thursday. He opened with a 2-0 victory over Prairie Central’s Nathan Ellingson (6-0, 6-2) but then lost 2-0 to Saskatoon’s William Preciado (6-0, 6-0).

In boys’ doubles, Wallster and Clark Cabiluna beat Prairie Central 2-0 (6-1, 6-1) and defeated Saskatoon by default.
