There was short notice to pull it all together, but the directors of the Weyburn Agricultural Society are “pumped” they get to put on the Weyburn Fair Days after having to cancel it in 2020 due to COVID restrictions.
The Fair will kick off at 5 p.m. on Thursday, July 15, when the Canuck Amusements midway opens, and there will be events through to Sunday, July 18, with the culmination of the “Rumble in the Ring” demolition derby.
“It feels good to be doing this for the community,” said Ag Society president Kent Fisher, noting that it was short notice for the volunteer members, but they were excited to pull it all together and stage it in the week after the lifting of all COVID restrictions.
“Everybody’s pumped to be working at the fair and to put it on again,” he said, adding they have reached out to their volunteers to help them out.
While they’ve lined up a number of volunteers, there still is room for more to come help out, particularly on Saturday. In addition, Brittany Stepp is lining up volunteers for the gates, and she can be reached at 306-861-4179.
There are 13 midway rides, including two new ones, the Orbiter and Dizzy Dragon. It will open at 3 p.m. on Friday, and at noon on Saturday and Sunday. A feature for opening night on Thursday is that ride wristbands will be $10 off the regular price, said Fisher.
While there won’t be chuckwagon races this year, a new feature will be the Deep South Ladies Barrel Racing Jackpot, and this will go on Friday evening in front of the grandstands starting at 6:30 p.m.
Fisher noted that on Saturday, there will be an expanded DQ Kids Rodeo event, starting at 10 a.m., along with the Summer Sizzler trade show. This will be set up in the Weyburn Curling Rink, and will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The demo derby and lawn mower races will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, and the Soo Line Cruisers will hold a car show on the fairgrounds starting at noon, lining up along Crescent Point Place and the Sports Arena.
To encourage more people to attend Sunday for the demo derby and car show, the admission to the fairgrounds will be $5 for children aged seven to 17, and $10 for those aged 18 and up. The admission for all ages on Thursday, Friday and Saturday is $5, cash only.
Fisher said there will baseball games at this year’s Fair, with the Weyburn Iron Pigs of the Qu’Appelle Valley Baseball League playing on Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. at Tom Laing Park. The Weyburn U18 Beavers will host a doubleheader on Saturday, with the first game to go at 1 p.m.
Another highlight for fair-goers will be the Kenny Wade Band, who will perform in the Forge and Anvil beer gardens on Saturday evening starting at 8:30 p.m. Fisher noted the beer gardens are open all four days of the fair.
There will also be new food vendors on the fair grounds, in addition to the concessions with the midway.
There will be parking available on the fairgrounds for $2 a day, through the south gates.
