Rodeo a go

“Everything’s a go!” says Jill Lowe, co-chair of the Moose Mountain Pro Rodeo committee.

After a one-year hiatus for most events, the 88th Moose Mountain Pro Rodeo is set for July 24 and 25.

“We had been waiting for the announcements for the different phases as well as the announcement of the Calgary Stampede before we decided to go ahead with the rodeo in Kennedy, so we were crossing our fingers,” explains Lowe.

Competitors traditionally carry on from the Stampede to the rodeo in Kennedy on their rodeo rounds, so it’s been confirmed that the tradition will carry on in 2021.

The rodeo is expected to run pretty much the same as other years with the exception of no bouncy houses for the little tykes. For those little ones, they’ll have the excitement of digging for treasures in the sand piles.

The rodeo committee will be providing food out of their new booth, and the ever-popular mini donut vendor will also be on the grounds.

“All the details are in place,” says Lowe. “We just have to fine-tune a couple of things.”

The rodeo starts with a slack performance on July 23 at 5 p.m. July 24 kicks off with a parade at noon followed by a demolition derby. For those entering the derby July 24 and 25, they’ve had an extra year to get their car in tip top shape.

A pop-up market will be at the rodeo grounds.

And of course, watch for the ever popular wild ponies.

This rodeo will be a Canadian Professional Rodeo Association and Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association approved rodeo, so the money the cowboys and cowgirls make here go towards their standings for the Canadian Finals Rodeo and the National Finals Rodeo.

Big Stone Rodeo Company will once again be providing the rodeo stock.

“One of the biggest jobs for the rodeo is getting the sponsorships,” explains Lowe, as she says that’s the next job on the list of things to do.

Tickets will be available ahead of time as well as at the door.

Hope to see you at the rodeo in Kennedy.
