It was learned Tuesday morning that a special mediator Richard Hornung has been assigned the duty of helping the government-trustee bargaining committee and the Saskatchewan Teachers' Federation end the dispute they are engaged in with regards to hammering out a new contract for educators in Saskatchewan.

The appointment of Hornung was made at the request of both parties.

Both sides have agreed to work with the mediator in an effort to reach a fair settlement and the teachers have agreed to suspend all job action and advertising activity until the mediation process reaches a resolution.

If Hornung is unable to obtain a consensus on outstanding issues prior to June 10, he will submit a report for consideration by the minister and cabinet setting out his findings during the mediation process and will provide a recommendation for a resolution of the outstanding issues. This report will be submitted on or before June 30.

Don Morgan, Labour Relations and Workplace Safety minister and Attorney-General, is the minister involved in this procedure.

Hornung is a well known mediator, conciliator and arbitrator with a national practice that is based from a Calgary headquarters. He is a former law professor at the University of Alberta among other credentials he currently holds, that include the past chairmanship of the Saskatchewan Labour Relations Board.
