FORT QU’APPELLE – RCMP have charged a 54-year-old man with passing a line of vehicles - including a police vehicle - in a construction zone.
Police say that about 4 p.m. on June 23, a Fort Qu’Appelle RCMP officer was stopped at a construction zone about five to 10 kilometres west of the Edgeley turnoff on Highway 10 when a maroon truck pulled out and passed a line of other vehicles and the police vehicle who were just starting to drive into the construction zone after being stopped.
The officer activated their lights and sirens but the vehicle sped away and refused to stop.
Police say that construction zone flag persons had to move for their safety.
Members of the White Butte RCMP located the vehicle and were able to pull it over on Highway 1 just west of the White City overpass. William Cappo of Fort Qu’Appelle District was arrested and charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle, flight from a peace officer, obstructing a peace officer, and possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose. Cappo was held in custody and appeared in Regina Provincial Court Friday.
“This incident occurred in a construction zone – placing the safety of both construction workers and all other motorists who were stopped at risk,” said S/Sgt. Jason Sauve, White Butte RCMP Detachment Commander.
“We want the people who witnessed this incident to know the individual was located by police and charged. We all must work together to ensure the safety of those working in construction zones – please slow down.”
