A variety of programs have been set by the Weyburn Public Library for June, along with registrations opening for the summer reading club.
For young children and families, activities include virtual storytime and the Baby and Me programs, and a story take and make kit that was made available on Monday.
To help celebrate National Indigenous History Month, a story walk has been set up in River Park just across from the gazebo, with story pages spread out along the path to allow participants to enjoy a story while walking through the park.
From June 2-14 was the story, “Emma’s Gems” by Anne Renaud, and from June 15-28 will be “Awasis and the World-Famous Bannock”, by Dallas Hunt.
The Lego Club will be posted online on Saturday, June 19 at 2 p.m., and participants can learn how to build a police car. People can build their own creations, and send in a photo by June 25 for a chance to win a prize.
A Canada Rock painting activity will have a take-and-make kit available on Saturday, June 26, just in time for Canada Day on July 1.
For Father’s day, a keychain craft for children aged six to 12 can get a take-and-make kit on Saturday, June 12 to make a keychain for Dad.
A virtual Kids cooking class will be posted online on Tuesday, June 22 at 4 p.m., as participants can learn how to make cheesecake blondies.
Signup for the summer reading program will open on Wednesday, June 16 online, and will be open throughout the summer. The club is for children aged three to 12, and runs from July 5 to Aug. 20.
The program will have take-and-make kits, virtual programs and a variety of chances to win prizes, with weekly activities, and the opportunity to track their reading progress for prizes.
For teens, a virtual program to create waterbead stress balls will be posted on Tuesday, June 15 at 4 p.m., and the teen summer reading challenge will begin on Wednesday, June 16. During the summer, teens can get a scratch-off ticket every time they take out a book or audiobook, and will have chances to win prizes, and enter the draw for the grand prize at the end of the summer.
Teens and adults can take part in the online book bingo, which is held live on Facebook on Thursday, June 17 at 6:30 p.m., and a grab’n’go paper picture frame activity will be available all month.
Adults can learn how to make Filipino spring rolls, with a video posted on Thursday, June 24 at 6 p.m., and an A-to-Z World Food video will be posted on Thursday, June 10 on making mushroom patties.
There will be a virtual author’s visit with Tara Gereaux on Monday, June 21, via Zoom at 6:30 p.m. Her first novella, “Size of a Fist”, was nominated for two Sask Book awards, and she has just published her debut novel, “Saltus”.
The sole in-person activity is the library’s book club, which will meet on June 21 at 6 p.m., to discuss this month’s selection, “Too Close to the Falls” by Catherine Gildiner. They will also be virtually attending the author’s virtual visit with Tara Gereaux.
Next month’s book will be “Serena” by Ron Rash.
