"I do a lot of golfing," says John Pott of Carlyle. "If it's not raining I'm golfing.”
Pott has been out golfing since April 3 this year. So far this spring he's golfed 20 9-hole rounds and 19 18-hole games. Not bad for, as he says, “an old guy.”
He says he golfs pretty well every day except one week in April when it got pretty cool.
Pott is a young at heart 82-year-old retired RCMP officer who served for 35 years.
Having been retired since 1992, he had to find something to keep him busy so golf is it.
"I first golfed when I was 19 but wasn't serious about it until after I retired."
Pott was stationed all across Canada and the Yukon and all over Saskatchewan. He came to Carlyle as a corporal many years ago and was stationed here for four years, and since settled back in Carlyle.
"There's a lot of nice golf courses in the area," says Pott, who has tried out many courses across Canada.
Pott says he has only ever had one hole in one. You just have to be lucky to get one of those.
"I've come close a lot of times...within 6 or 7 inches...but that's not a hole-in-one.”
Pott loves golfing because he says "It gets me out, it's something to do and it keeps me young."
"It's a beautiful 9-hole golf course we have here in Carlyle, and the staff who work there keep it up. The groundskeeper and Terri and her crew are very good there."
"They should be proud of how well they keep the golf course," praises Pott.
Carlyle’s course is one of the top 9-hole golf courses in the area and he believes it's in the best shape of any course in the area.
After retiring at the age of 52 Pott spent a lot of his time volunteering for various things to keep him occupied. He has been a past provincial president of the Royal Canadian Legion and a campground host at Kenosee Lake, among other things.
These days golfing is enough to keep him occupied as he golfs with the seniors every day.
"Maybe that's why I was suggested to be 'Golfer of The Week'...because I'm always there," says Pott with a little chuckle in his final comment.
