Alexis Hunt, owner of Good Habit Fitness in Shaunavon, welcomes locals to the gym as part of the regular Me Time program.

SHAUNAVON — Alexis Hunt, owner of Good Habit Fitness in Shaunavon, led a small but enthusiastic group of participants through a series of strength training exercises as part of the monthly Me Time initiative co-sponsored by Shaunavon Wellness & Leisure, the Grand Coteau Heritage & Cultural Centre and Shaunavon Library.

Good Habit Fitness was the March sponsor of Me Time and they hosted the Ease into Exercise beginner-friendly session on March 12.

The evening was an opportunity for those who may have been thinking about starting a fitness journey to see what the gym could offer in a fun, supportive environment.

The session, led by Hunt, was designed to help participants feel confident and comfortable with movement. Participants in the Me Time evening could definitely feel their muscles following three repetitions of strength training exercises utilizing various free weights.

Hunt is also the Director of Wellness & Leisure for the Town of Shaunavon and her passion for fitness has been a perfect fit with her role there. She says, "This will be my first summer season in the job and I'm excited for the upcoming swimming pool season. We'll be interviewing students for the Summer Active and lifeguard positions very soon. I was a lifeguard myself and lifeguarding is where I became interested in Paramedicine, too."

Hunt has training in Kinesiology, Paramedicine and her Fitness Instructor certification through canfitpro. A mother of two young boys, she made a conscious effort to continue a fitness regime at home when they were babies and toddlers, which she also referred to as her 'Me Time'. Hunt says, "Exercise is so important not only for physical health but also mental health." Two years ago the opportunity arose for her and her husband to open a gym in a downtown space and Good Habit Fitness was born. She says their members range in age from youth to older adults in their seventies. "High school gym classes also come and use the space and I've been surprised by the number of youth who come regularly to use the gym. It's great to have such a mix of people."

Monthly adult memberships are $65 and there are special rates for youth and reduced rates for multi-month memberships. The gym space includes cardio machines, strength training and weight machines and a space for free weights and classes. Hunt adds, "I offer classes periodically and hope to offer a session again soon."
