YORKTON - It might be September, but there’s still time to learn some baseball skills.

And, that’s what several youth were doing under the tutelage of instructor Jared Franklin Sunday at Lions Park in Yorkton.

“It’s more opportunity for them to play longer, into September when it’s still nice,” he said.

The Sunday session had Franklin working with youth nine and under, and he kept the instruction very basic.

“The biggest thing is I want them to have fun,” he said.

So it started with setting the mood for the young players who donned eye black, chewed some gum, and did some sliding to ensure a dirty uniform.

Also on hand for the session were parents and guardians – not just watching from the stands – but on the field participating.

Franklin said at a young age players don’t always throw and catch smoothly, so playing catch with an adult is a big help.

“And it gets parents involved and learning what I’m teaching,” he said.

Franklin added it’s good to see them interacting.

“You don’t see parents playing catch in the yard with kids anymore. Out here we’re doing it,” he said.

Franklin will also be holding winter sessions on Sundays in the Agripavilion.
