Wilkie’s New Year baby, Michele Starchief was born to mom Darlene of Cando. Peggy Kugler, on behalf of the hospital auxiliary, presented Mrs. Starchief with an engraved silver spoon.

Maureen Zunti of Salvador was named secretary of the new northwest Regional 4-H Council, believed to be the first regional 4-H council in the province.

Evesham UCW (United Church Women) passed their budget which included provision “for the care of a needy child for the coming year.”

Bob Challis wrote to The Wilkie Press, wondering why, with approximately 394 eligible boys between the ages of five and 19 living in Wilkie and area, only 117 were playing hockey, Canada’s number one team sport. He concluded there was too much emphasis on “beating the other guy” instead of personal improvement.

Ken and Gayleen Bretzer lost their farm home west of Unity in a fire which left only the chimney standing.

Jason Briggs was a double winner at the Unity wildlife supper, with the best junior mule deer and largest junior goose.

Terry Sittler, Roxanne Hofer, Sharon Jaindl and Vicki Karstens won the Wilkie Curling Club’s Ladies Open Bonspiel.

Unity town council heard considerable opposition from citizens and nearby businesses, after they had already given Unity Motor Hotel owner Terry Sieben approval to install a coal-burning furnace.

Gilbert Kohlman’s purchase of the Denzil Brick School was approved by the Kerrobert School Unit board.
