High school track and field stars earn medals

Students represent their school and districts at annual SHSAA track and field meet in Saskatoon.

UNITY – Track athletes from across province met in Saskatoon on June 7 and 8 for the Saskatchewan High School Athletic Association’s annual track and field meet.

Amongst the athletes were students from Cut Knife, Neilburg, Unity, Macklin, Wilkie, Kerrobert and Luseland. While students knew they were competing against the best in the province, there were some students who were not able to make the top 10 despite giving it their all.

The weather was not overly cooperative over the two days, giving 60 km per hour winds on day one followed by a cloudy and cool day two.

There were a few students from Luseland School, Neilburg Composite School, McLurg High School and Unity Composite School that rose to the top during the event. From Luseland, Lily Holman came in seventh in the 400 m and placed second in both the 800 m and 1,500 m runs in her age category. Jace Newport from Neilburg also had the opportunity to stand on the podium, placing third in javelin.

McLurg High School had a team of 11 students taking part in various events. Kayden Fenrich placed first in the javelin event in the intermediate age group while senior student Carter Wakelin placed third in his javelin event. Cheyanne Cey, who was in the junior age division, placed fifth in the 400 m, eighth in both the 200 m run and 80 m hurdles. Emerson Cey was seventh in the junior long jump, Luke Garrett took eighth spot in the senior long jump and Reese Fenrich was tenth in senior shot put.

Unity Composite sent a team of 16 students to represent their school and the Battle West district. Although none of the students placed on the podium, coach Michelle Van De Meutter did say it was a successful meet. Dawson Gilbert was fifth in the 100 m hurdles and seventh in high jump and Dawson Rusk received eighth place in high jump. In the discus event, Keanna Kelly placed fifth and Jordis Zunti placed eighth. Molly Orobko placed ninth in senior discus, Casey Lewin tenth in long jump and Kira Purcell tenth in her discus event. In the 4 x 100 m relay, Gilbert took ninth while Rusk placed tenth.

Congratulations to all the athletes that participated and to those who had personal bests.
