A young boy’s body was recovered from the depths of Boundary Dam reservoir on Monday morning after he was reported missing on Sunday afternoon while swimming with a friend off the beach area at Woodlawn Regional Park.

Corporal Craig Park of the Estevan detachment of the RCMP, issued a statement early Monday afternoon, saying the body was recovered around 10:30 a.m. about 100 feet from shore in close proximity to where he was last seen swimming around 2 p.m. Sunday.

The name of the boy is not being released by police and Park said the detachment’s thoughts and sympathy went out to the family who are Estevan residents. They were notified immediately after the recovery.

“We want to thank the civilians who were in boats in the area who set up an immediate search effort,” Park said.

The RCMP’s underwater recovery team arrived at Boundary Dam in the early evening and underwent several dives throughout the night and early morning before the body was retrieved. Park said he could not comment on any other factors such as water or current conditions at the time.

Park added that Estevan Police Service and Combined Traffic Services members provided assistance along with Carlyle Traffic Services and RCMP detachment members. Estevan Emergency Medical Services personnel and Estevan Fire Rescue volunteers and leaders were also on the scene at various times to lend professional assistance.

The RCMP Corporal said they appreciated the fact that news media and public were respectful of the situation and the family during a very trying and stressful period.

“And, the assistance given was appreciated,” he said.
