CARLYLE — One of the two people charged in connection with a homicide on the White Bear First Nations in 2024 was back in Carlyle Provincial Court on Feb. 12.

Jeremy Whitebear is charged with one count of second-degree murder in connection with the death of Talon Lonethunder. Whitebear's matter was adjourned to Feb. 26 in Carlyle court. He was remanded into custody.

The co-accused in the case, Dwayne Maxie, is also scheduled to be back in court on Feb. 26. Maxie has been charged with manslaughter in Lonethunder's death.

Background: At approximately 2:30 a.m. on Dec. 3, the Carlyle RCMP received a report of an injured individual at a residence on the White Bear First Nations. Officers responded and located the 33-year-old Lonethunder deceased. He was originally from White Bear and was residing in Coronach.

Charges were announced Dec. 5. Both Whitebear and Maxie were on the run at that time. Whitebear was arrested two days later at WBFN. Maxie was apprehended Dec. 12 in Regina.

Also on Feb. 12, Zachary Christopher Hillis was in court to answer to the various charges he is facing. Hillis' matters were adjourned to March 12. He also remains in custoday.

Background: Hillis was arrested after the Carnduff RCMP received a request for assistance Oct. 23 from a rural property northwest of Glen Ewen.

Officers responded and determined a man had assaulted a woman. They located Hillis, who was wanted on a warrant by the Carnduff RCMP for breaching court-ordered release conditions. Hillis was arrested at the scene without incident.

After further investigation, the RCMP says officers located and seized two firearms, ammunition, a pocket knife, approximately two grams of cocaine and drug trafficking paraphernalia from the rural property.

Hillis was initially charged with one count each of unauthorized possession of a firearm, unsafe storage of firearms, assault, uttering threats, and possession for the purpose of trafficking (cocaine). He was also charged with two counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and four counts of failing to comply with his release conditions.

He has since been charged with being unlawfully in a dwelling and for violating his release conditions.

He is also facing drug and firearm charges stemming from an arrest earlier in the year.

None of the charges have been proven in court.
