ESTEVAN - Motorists will soon be able to legally drive a little faster on a couple of highways in the Estevan area.
The RM of Estevan sent a letter to the Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure last year, asking for the limit to increase on Highway 39 east and west of the city, and Highway 47 north of Estevan. The City of Estevan sent a letter supporting the request.
A response from the ministry, released at Monday night's city council meeting, stated radar speed studies and a review of the roadway geometrics were completed on July 30 and Aug. 1, to assess the need for any speed zone adjustments.
"The assessment indicated that the requested speed increases are supported at two of the identified locations," the letter said.
For Highway 47, the ministry said a speed increase from 60 to 70 kilometres per hour is warranted from Township Road 25 to a location 300 metres north of the Estevan bypass. As for Highway 39 west of the city, a speed increase from 80 to 90 km/h will occur from Rafferty Road to a point 100 metres west of the junction with the bypass.
The ministry will arrange for the implementation of the new posted speed limits.
There will not be change to the speed limits on Highway 39 east of the city.
