ROCANVILLE — Recently, TD Canada Trust announced that they will close their Rocanville branch effective August 22, 2025, with customer accounts transitioning to the next closest branch, being Yorkton.
Rocanville Mayor Ron Reed said the bank’s closure will be a blow to the community.
“We never want to see a business in town close—especially something as established as TD—because once it’s gone, you never get it back,” he said. “It’s definitely not a good thing for the town.”
Mayor Reed feels losing the TD branch will hurt the local economy.
“We’ll definitely feel it in town, it’s always nice to have competition. It’s good for the economy,” he said. “If it’s a one-horse town, it’s a lot easier for that horse to kind of go a little wild every now and again.”
The town has accounts with both financial institutions in Rocanville—TD Canada Trust and Conexus Credit Union.
With the nearest TD branch being over an hour away, switching accounts to the remaining bank across the street seems far more convenient.
“We’ve already committed that we’re going to make this switch over to the credit union,” Mayor Reed said. “We did have accounts in both banks, but TD has been our primary institution.”
He’s also heard from residents with mortgages through TD who are considering their options, also leaning toward the convenience factor.
“No offence to Yorkton, but it doesn’t have the draw of some of the other centres,” said Mayor Reed. “If your local branch is Brandon or Regina or something like that, that’s even more of a trek. So it’s a little disheartening, but every business has got to make their own decisions, and what’s feasible for them as a company, to be able to provide to the area.”
